The Israeli families of 65 surrogate babies born in Thailand, are protesting that they have been unable to take their children home because they don’t have passports.
While surrogacy in Thailand is certainly a rapidly-growing area of medical innovation, this story demonstrates that there are a number of legal considerations prospective parents should consider. Thailand currently has no laws or published case decisions directly relating to the practice of surrogacy, and in essence surrogacy is neither legal nor illegal in Thailand.
The families however are holding Interior Minister Gideon Sa’ar responsible for failing to issue the children passports over the past two months. Many celebrities have also started to join in the protest, posting messages of support on various social media networking sites.
