If it advances, Spain will join Russia and Indonesia
Euro Weekly News reports that the Spanish Prime Minister’s Popular Party (PP) is planning to ban the use of internet memes in the country.
The proposal was introduced to Congress and would implement restrictions on “spreading images that infringe the honor of a person,” which, according to the report, was referenced from a 1992 law that became obsolete after the emergence of the internet.
The proposal was made for the new law to be included in the Citizen Security Law 2015, a widely unpopular law that puts checks on public protests, comments on social media and disrespecting the police.
The proposal has received major backlash from citizens, with some calling it “attack on humorous political commentary”.
Should the proposal advance, Spain will join Russia, which has already outlawed memes and Indonesia, which has been reported to outlaw memes in the coming future.
