So, David Cameron Had a Dalliance With a Pig, But is this Distracting Us From Bigger Issues?

The allegations that British Prime Minister David Cameron once put his genitals into a dead pig’s mouth, have, perhaps unsurprisingly, been a topic of much derision since the news broke yesterday.

The fraternity-type initiation that apparently took place while Cameron attended Oxford University, was revealed in an unauthorized biography of the Tory leader by old friend Lord Ashcroft. The tell-all biography seems to be an act of revenge. Businessman Ashcroft donated large sums of money to the party, and in return had hoped for a high position in the party, which was subsequently not offered to him.

Social media has been awash with #piggate jokes, but more serious concerns have been raised by employers as to their workers productivity, with many people too distracted by the story to focus on their jobs.

That this story could be a planned distraction technique is hinted at by Nicola Sturgeon, leader of the Scottish National Party, who said the allegations had “entertained the nation” but that Cameron still needs to address when he knew about Ashcroft’s tax status.

She told Channel 4 News: “There was one serious allegation this morning that I think perhaps he does have to answer, and that was about the fact allegedly he knew about Lord Ashcroft’s [non-domiciled] non-dom status much earlier than he admitted to knowing about. That’s one that perhaps shouldn’t just be allowed to disappear into the ether with some of the more lewd ones.”

Governments have long been accused of leaning on media groups to distract the public by creating a scandal by way of avoiding a more serious truth. Bill Clinton’s government for example, faced allegations of bank fraud, campaign finance fraud, regulatory interference, bribery and obstruction of justice, but these went largely unreported when news of his affair with Monica Lewinsky broke.

Thailand attorney’s Chaninat and Leeds have a team of bilingual, highly qualified lawyers, with a wide range of expertise.

So, could the Conservative government be choosing to encourage the spread of this story, in order to distract people from more serious topics?

Consider: Last year one of Cameron’s closest aides and adviser on internet porn filters, turned out to have a personal collection of child pornography himself. An astonishing irony made far worse when it turns out that Downing Street had been keeping the allegations against Patrick Rock a secret.

This begs the question – what other atrocities is the government hiding, or at the least trying to stop people thinking about too much?

As one writer for The Independent puts it:

“The idea of someone doing something like this with a dead pig’s mouth is pretty awful – actually, it’s completely vomit-inducing. But possibly the weirdest thing about it is that it isn’t even close to the worst thing David Cameron has done.”

And consider this from the New Statesman:

“There are a lot of things that David Cameron has definitely done that I do find disgusting, though. Taking away benefits from sick and disabled people, pricing poor kids out of higher education, and forcing millions of families to rely on food banks. That, to me, is shocking and grotesque. I don’t give a damn about what he did or didn’t do to that pig, and whether there was mood-lighting involved.”

What do you think – is the story a way to intentionally blind people to the real issues? Let us know in the comments!
