Amnesty International have stepped in to try and ensure the safety of two sisters, aged 23 and 15, who were ordered to be raped and paraded naked by their village council, reports Al Jazeera.

The unelected, all male council, in the state of Uttar Pradesh have ordered this as punishment for the family after their brother eloped with a married woman.
The family have now fled to Delhi where they remain in hiding. Earlier this month, the elder sister filed a petition at India’s Supreme Court, asking for protection to return home safely.

The Supreme Court have ordered authorities in Uttar Pradesh to reply to the petition by 15 September, but one of the brothers told Amnesty International “After we went to the Supreme Court, the villagers are even more aggressive.”
