Singapore PM ‘happy’ to talk trade deals
Following the withdrawal of the U.S from the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said that the country will sign the trade deal if there is a consensus among the remaining 11 member countries.
In an interview with BBC’s HARDTalk aired on March 1st, Loong added that he was not sure if such a consensus would happen.
“The Japanese in particular made very painful concessions in exchange for American concessions,” he said. “And if you have a deal in which the Japanese have these concessions and the Americans are not party, I think that the political balance and economic balance have shifted.
“So I would not rule it out, but I think it is not so easy to achieve.”
Lee also criticized Trump for his decision to fulfill a campaign pledge and withdraw the United States from the long-negotiated 12-country trade deal.
