Singapore’s sodomy law (Section 377A of the Penal Code) is now on trial for violating the rights of gay men. This is because the Singapore Constitution guarantees that all Singaporeans are equal before the law and entitled to equal protection of the law.
This came up when a man was arrested for having sex with another man in a public restroom at a shopping mall. The men were convicted under the Singapore law that states “any male person who, in public or private, commits, or abets the commission of, or procures or attempts to procure the commission by any male person of, any act of gross indecency with another male person.”
On the flip side there have been cases of police threatening men for having sex with other men in Singapore. What it comes down to is that the country is taking a second look at their laws for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people so that there is no discrimination.
Then there are countries such as Taiwan where the country’s first same-sex marriage was held at a monastery.
