Shorter Marriage Equals Smaller Divorce Payments-UK Court

Millionaire appealed that her husband should not receive half of her assets because the marriage was a short one

In a landmark decision, a UK Court of Appeals ruled in favor of a British millionaire Julie Sharp overturning a previous ruling that entitled her husband to half of the assets she had amassed during their 4 year marriage.

She argued that “because this was a short marriage he should not get half of the matrimonial pot”.

A ruling in 2015 had awarded the husband, IT consultant Robin Sharp, £2.725 million but the Court of Appeal reduced it to £2 million.

According to The Telegraph, leading divorce lawyers have warned that the ruling marks a “sea change” in how one of the basic principles of matrimonial law could now be applied to shorter marriages.

Currently, the length of the marriage has no bearing in the splitting of wealth in the case of divorce.

“It was an area in which we had a pretty rigid rule. Now there is a caveat; in certain circumstances, we do not follow it,” said divorce lawyer Alex Carruthers to The Telegraph.
