Shocking Video of Abuse Against Maine Prison Inmate

by Admin on March 22, 2013

A local media outlet in Maine has published a shocking leaked video of a prison inmate enduring abuses by prison guards. The video, online in its entirety along with an excerpt, shows the inmate being pepper sprayed directly in the face, calling for help, and then being left unattended.

Windham Correctional Center inmate Paul Schlosser is shown being tied to a restraint chair as prison officials dressed in riot gear strap him down for what looks to be no apparent reason. Captain Shawn Welch then sprays him in the face, after Schlosser reportedly spit in the captain’s face.

More disturbing than the video itself is the Maine Department of Corrections’ reaction to it. After the video leaked, the Department assigned an investigator to find the source of the video and how it got to the media.

RT reports that Schlosser was being restrained because of a self-inflicted wound to his arm and refused treatment. He was on multiple medications for bipolar disorder and depression prior to the incident.

The Captain was initially fired after the incident, but then Maine’s corrections commissioner reduced the penalty to a 30-day suspension.

Schlosser had been a medic in the military. He was serving seven years for a robbery spree in 2010. Prior to the incident, Schlosser had a clean prison record.

Don’t judge all of Maine by this. The majority of the state was mortified when this leaked.
