Sex Sells but Thailand Censors Aren’t Buying

Thailand’s Got Talent has been seeing its share of surprises. First there was the “artist,” Duangjai Jansauoni, who went topless and began painting a mural with her breasts. According to Culture Minister Sukomol Kunplome, the nudity displayed is not considered appropriate in Thai society.

Now the ministry plans to call a meeting with the show’s organizers, editing crew, and censoring agency to “discuss the issue and find solutions.” Culture Minister Sukumol Kunplome said the producer should explain why the inappropriate content was not edited out.

The panel’s female judge stated that she did not support the act and did not pass Jansauoni. However, the two male judges advanced her to the second round.

Despite a reputation as a haven for nightlife and romance, Thailand’s authorities are quite conservative and view themselves as the protectors of the Kingdom’s morality. This translates into censorship. According to RTT News, even Lady Gaga has been condemned by the Thai Cultural Ministry for her racy performance in Bangkok where he provocatively wore a Thai flag.

Just last year another contestant wowed the judges by way of song. A transgender singer in Thailand who had all the looks of a lanky Thai girl opened up by singing in an alto voice that was unmistakably female. However, the surprise came when the contestant switched to a male’s voice. A throwback to what this now female once was.

However, after Duangjai Jansauoni’s bare breast-performance, unlike her transgender predecessor, there is apparently no doubt that Duangjai is a true-born female.
