Divorce Rate for 50 Plus Group Spikes
According to research from Bowling Green State University, the divorce
rate across the US has stabilized but for those who are 50 and over divorce has been on the rise.
The research showed that one in four people who are 50 and older are getting divorced. Called the ‘gray divorce revolution,’ this change in marriage status is usually initiated by the wife. Pepper Schwartz, a love and relationship ambassador for AARP said this is because women become tired of doing “all the work.”
Bowling Green State University Professor of Sociology Susan Brown stated that over the next 20 years “there will be a 25 per cent increase in the number of people over the age of 50 who will go through a divorce.”
Thailand seems to receive many new foreign residents who have just gone through a divorce in their home country. Most of these new arrivals are men who are coming to Thailand during or after a divorce to find a new life.
According to Thailand divorce lawyers , Thailand has a huge market of young women seeking financial stability, and for some “true love” from older foreign husbands.
In some Isaan communities this has become a cottage industry. Divorce rates are also rising with the breakdown of the traditional nuclear family. As more young people arrive in Bangkok and other major cities for employment, leaving their rural homes in the provinces, families feel the strain. Many rural Thais leave their families, spouses and children in the provinces and this puts a strain on relationships.
