This week, California became the third U.S. state to pass laws regulating computer-driven cars tested by companies, reports Fox 5 New York.
In addition to implementing several rules that test drivers and companies must follow, California’s Department of Motor Vehicles now requires self-driving cars to be registered and issued testing permit before they are allowed onto the public roads.
Fox 5 reports that, to date, the DMV has issued testing permits to 29 vehicles from three companies that had already been testing the vehicles: Google, Mercedes, and the Volkswagen Group of America.

Though self-driving cars are only being tested in California at the present time, California is preparing for a future when its citizens have access to the computer controlled vehicles. The DMV has until the end of the year to submit draft regulations governing self-driving cars should they become available to the general public, according to Fox 5.
