An internationally renowned lawyer, Dr. Khaled Bin Abdul Aziz Al-Nuwaisser, has requested the Saudi government to adopt a bill similar to the one passed in the US allowing Saudi citizens to sue countries that may have played a role in atrocities committed against the kingdom reports Saudi Gazette.

Speaking to the Gazette the lawyer said that bill was unfortunate and set a dangerous precedent. He added “It’s now imperative to pass a similar law or Saudi JASTA that would allow every Saudi to take legal action against any government that sponsors terrorism against the Kingdom, including Iran and Hezbollah, by filing lawsuits at Saudi courts.”

JASTA has received severe criticism from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) which in a statement said “the law is a violation of the immunity from sovereign states , which is a basic and established legal principle in international relations and international law.”

JASTA was initially vetoed by President Obama but passed by a Congressional override.
