President Vladimir Putin has signed a bill that limits the adoption of Russian children by people from countries that allow same-sex marriage.
The move comes shortly after the Supreme Court in the US struck down it’s controversial Defence of Marriage Act paving the way for same sex marriage plus for such couples to be given equal rights as heterosexual marriages.
However Russia’s new law will not allow adoption by same-sex foreign couples whose home country recognizes their marriage. Single people or unmarried couples will also now no longer be able to adopt.
If nothing else, this shows Russia’s determination to buck the Western trend of greater acceptance of homosexuality.
Equally, Thailand is one of the most tolerant countries in Asia with regards to homosexuality. Indeed, both male and female same-sex sexual activity are legal in Thailand, but same-sex couples are not eligible for the same legal protections available to opposite-sex couples. Thailand adoption law currently does not recognize same-sex marriages, civil unions or domestic partnerships and it is unclear if a same-sex couple or an individual LGBT Thai would be permitted to adopt or have custody of children.
