Rename Hot Dogs or Lose Halal Certification in Malaysia

Muslim majority Malaysia has announced that all food outlets are to rename hot dogs or risk being refused halal certification reports RT.

The ruling was requested by Malaysian Islamic Development Department and was approved by the government because dogs are considered unclean according to Islam.

The director of halal division in the Department of Islamic Development, Sirajuddin Suhaimee said to AFP, “Any [halal] products that make consumers confused, we have to change- In Islam, dogs are considered unclean and the name cannot be related to halal certifications.”

The ruling has received wide ridicule from citizens and lawmakers alike.  Nazri Aziz, Minister of Malaysian Tourism and Culture called the law “stupid and backward.”

“Hot dog is hot dog lah. Even in Malay it’s called hot dog – it’s been around for so many years,” he said “It comes from the English language. Please do not make us seem stupid and backward.”
