Thailand is home to thousands of British citizens. It is very common here in Thailand to see marriages between Thai and British nationals. Sadly, it is also common for some of these marriages to end in divorce.

We often have clients ask us if the legal status of a marriage or a divorce will remain intact if they travel or move overseas.

In this video, Anna Power of Chaninat & Leeds attorneys explains that recognition of foreign marriages is important for many reasons. It can assist with knowing whether the marriage is in accordance with the local English law, the legitimacy of children and the availability of divorce claims – if a  marriage is not recognized locally there is no opportunity for a divorce or divorce claims

Generally in developed countries the status transferred by marriage or divorce will be recognized by other countries, with some exceptions for example some Islamic countries.
