The FBI raided a Money yeshiva last Wednesday night and arrested four men, including two rabbis, who allegedly kidnapped and beat men who had refused to grant their wives religious divorces which meant they would be prevented from re-marrying under Jewish law reports the Jewish Press.
It is alleged the men used “electric cattle prods, karate, handcuffs and place plastic bags over the heads of husbands.” It is further alleged that the so-called Divorce gang have been operating for approximately 20 years.
However another Rabbi has told the Jewish Press that forcing husbands to grant a divorce is permitted under Jewish law, and that physical force can be used if a Bet Din [religious court] authorizes it and if there are substantial reasons to order a divorce
Even in non-Jewish marriages, it is common that one spouse seeks a quick divorce to re-marry. As Thailand lawyers Chaninat and Leeds, we have noticed that matters tend to become more complicated when one spouse does not voluntarily consent to a divorce. There is no “no fault divorce” in the courts of Thailand. This means that an spouse suing for divorce must state some type of misconduct as a Ground for Divorce in Thailand or, at minimum, have a long period of separation.
