Queensland is to introduce legislation to standardize the age of consent, bringing an end to a law which discriminates against gay people, reports Brisbane Times.
Currently, the legal age of consent for vaginal sex is 16, but anal sex remains illegal until the age of 18, and is still referred to as sodomy under the Criminal Code.
This means that young gay men have had issues seeking safe sex information, with health care practitioners obligated to inform those asking about the illegality of the act.

Queensland is the only jurisdiction in Australia where the ages of consent are different.
Health Minister Cameron Dick said:
“By making this change, we’re addressing the disparity between the age of consent for penetrative sex, which has resulted in adverse consequences for young people in this state.”
