The law requires there to be a 9 meter distance between smokers and building entrances
CBC News reports that the final phase of Quebec’s tobacco act came into full effect on Saturday. The Tobacco Control Act was revamped to help combat smoking in the province.
Under the new law, smoking is not allowed within nine meters of building entrances, windows or air intake of public and private establishments.

Formerly called the Tobacco Act, different phases of the new law have been enforced such as increasing fines for violations and restrictions on marketing and packaging of cigarettes. According to CBC, restaurants and bars that are found in violation of these provisions can be fined up to $100,000.
Bar owners have criticized the law calling it unfair and vague since the rules seem to penalize only suburban and regional bars. Those that are located close to municipal sidewalks are exempt from the law.
