Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a bill allowing Russia to classify international media outlets as “foreign agents”, Zero Hedge reports.
The legislation came in response to the US Justice Department registering Russia’s RT America as a foreign agent earlier this month, calling it “Russia’s state-run propaganda machine”.
Under this new law, Russia is now able to brand international media in the same way, as well as forcing them to disclose their funding sources.
The bill was hurried through parliament in just a couple of weeks, and the Russian judiciary has already named several US-funded media organizations that will be targeted, including Voice of America and Radio Free Europe.
The law was signed with immediate effect.
