In the wake of a fact-finding mission investigating crimes carried out against the Rohingya, the United Nations Human Rights Council has issued a report calling on Myanmar’s top commander and other high-ranking military leaders–who run the Myanmar government–to be prosecuted for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.
The campaign of ethnic cleansing and intimidation against the Muslim Rohingyas in the country has drawn widespread outrage from the international community.
In total, over half-a-million Rohingyas have been forced to flee to Bangladesh while thousands have been killed.
The gross human rights violations and abuses committed in Kachin, Rakhine, and Shan states… stem from deep fractures in [Burmese] society and structural problems that have been apparent and unaddressed for decades,” the report states. “Undoubtedly [the government’s actions] amount to the gravest crimes under international law.”
The UN’s report was conducted over a year-long investigation that interviewed over 875 victims and witnesses as well as analyzed satellite images, verified documents, photographs, and videos. Crimes of enslavement, displacement, unjust imprisonment, disappearances, torture, rape, and murder were found during the investigation.
