Exceptions only to fix errors

The transgender community of Indiana will be unable to change sex on their birth certificates if a proposed law passes.
According to a report by Law Newz, “Rep. Bruce Borders (R-District 45) introduced HB 1361 to the state House of Representatives on Thursday.
There are exceptions, but only to fix mistakes: 1) an individual filling out the birth certificate miswrote the sex; 2) biological tests proved that a person had a Y chromosome despite being categorized as female; or 3) biological test proved a person lacked a Y chromosome despite being categorized as male.”
Should the law pass, it will come into effect on July 1st this year. As the current law stands, transgender people who want to change their sex on birth certificates can do so by obtaining a court order. Unsurprisingly, the LGBT community strongly disapproves of the legislation.
Campaign manager of Freedom Indiana, a civil rights organization said as quoted by Law Newz, “This discriminatory bill is completely unnecessary,”and if passed, “HB 1361 would further harm Indiana’s already damaged reputation as an open and welcoming state.”
While it may seem like many states and countries are progressing towards recognizing the rights of the LGBT community, many still are lagging behind in giving their trans and gay community proper rights, especially in Muslim dominated countries where homosexuality is a crime punishable by death.
Even in Thailand, a country famous for “ladyboys” and “toms”, LGBT rights are hardly recognized. Under Thai law, marriage between two same-sex individuals is still not recognized. A homosexual couple in Thailand will not even be able to adopt because Thai adoption law states that adoption is possible only between married individuals.
