In the past couple of years, Phuket has been turning into a destination of increasing dangers. According to Live Trading News, “armed gangs, some Tuk-Tuk drivers, some Jet Ski operators, tour operators etc” around the island are mostly controlled by criminal elements.
While the usual petty crimes are expected in any country, the crimes in Phuket have turned into more serious offenses. Most recently Vorsit “Plawan” Issara, the owner of Phuket’s Sripanwa luxury resort was stabbed twice in the stomach and hacked in the neck with a makeshift axe outside a Phuket nightclub.
Australian tourist Michelle Smith was another victim in Phuket when she was stabbed to death in Kata. Now more than 50 police officers are trying to find the two men who attacked her. Tammee Lee Lynn, who was with Michelle, had her armed slashed in the attack but survived.
In June alone there were a number of business related murders in Phuket on Thai nationals.
However, not all of Phuket’s dangers have been crime related. A couple honeymooning on the island experienced a disaster on a white water rafting tour when their raft capsized. The husband, Hossamellein Mostafa Abdallas Hamada, was killed after being thrown overboard and his body was not found until three days later.
The danger has also seemed to spread to Phuket’s outlying islands with the death of two Canadian sisters on Phi Phi . Thought to be a poisoning, the death of the two girls has continued to puzzle friends and family alike. According to Thailand lawyers, the major legal cases arising out of Phuket involve Thai criminal defense law, Thai personal injury law , and Thai real estate law .
