Following the Pentagon’s decision to lift the ban on transgender men and women serving in June, the military has now announced that it will pay for gender reassignment surgery for transgender soldiers.

According to Circa News, the policy under the Department of Defense states that eligibility for gender reassignment is applicable to soldiers whose ability to serve is “adversely affected by a medical condition or medical treatment related to their gender identity.”

Operation of the program could cost the military up to $8.4 million a year reports Circa.

Family members and retirees can also take advantage of the transgender health benefits such as hormone therapy but only active soldiers are eligible for the gender reassignment surgery.

LGBT communities have welcomed the decision but there are some in the military that oppose the policy claiming it as a “gross misuse” of military medical funds.
