According to the New York Post, Canada has introduced a ‘gender neutral’ option on passports and other government documents.
All federal documentation provided by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) now have a third option for gender, given as an ‘X’ for ‘unspecified gender’.
Honorable Ahmed Hussen, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, explained the decision in his statement. “By introducing an ‘X’ gender designation in our government-issued documents, we are taking an important step towards advancing equality for all Canadians regardless of gender identity or expression”.

Canada is the 10th country to introduce the option, after Australia, Bangladesh, Germany, India, Malta, Nepal, New Zealand and Pakistan.
In the UK, activist Christie Elan-Cane is campaigning for the UK to follow suit. Elan-Cane identifies as non-gendered and calls the UK Government’s passport policy ‘discriminatory’. Today, the Royal Courts of Justice will decide whether they can proceed to a High Court hearing on the matter.
