According to the New York Times, Pakistan’s Parliament is ready to pass the country’s first ever transgender law.
The Transgender Persons Protection of Rights Bill recognizes transgender people as equal citizens and provides penalties for those who commit violence or discriminate against them.
The bill is supported by all of the country’s major political parties, and is expected to be passed with no objections.

Naeema Kishwar Khan is a Pakistani politician who sponsored the bill. She described it as “the right of these people, not only a right as human beings but as citizens of this country”. “There is overwhelming support from other major political parties. No one has opposed it”, she added.
