A sex worker has won the right to ply her trade from a Moranbah motel in Mackay, Queensland, even though its owners had banned her.
The Civil and Administrative Tribunal found the owners of Moranbah’s Drovers Rest Motel contravened the Anti-Discrimination Act by banning the prostitute. The sex worker won the case on appeal after having her original claim dismissed.
Mackay motel owners expressed outrage, saying business owners have the right to decide. Pioneer Villa Motel owner Daryl Waldron said he would prefer to have an empty room than have a prostitute ply their trade in side.
Another motel owner on the same road said sex workers were more prominent in Mackay than other areas.
The sex worker lost her original case last year when she claimed damages of $30,000 for economic loss, humiliation, and stress. The claim was dismissed under the 1992 Liquor Act, which states motels can refuse entry to people wanting to operate business from their rooms.
