Oregon Republican lawmaker Brian Boquist, R-Dallas has introduced a legislation that would effectively ban Sharia law from influencing court decisions.

Senate Bill 479 states “A court of this state may not consider Sharia law in making judicial decisions.”

The move has sparked outrage among the Muslim community with Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations calling it “unconstitutional” and anti-Muslim.

Hooper said to Oregon Live, “In many cases (legislators) don’t really care whether it passes or not. They want to marginalize American Muslims and Islam. Just to introduce this kind of legislation can have that effect, because it gives Islamophobes a platform.”

According to Jim Moore, professor and director of the Tom McCall Center for Policy Innovation at Pacific University, sharia law has never been cited in American courts. “Sharia isn’t used in court cases,” he said to Oregon Live. “It would not have a direct bearing in any court case.”

Similar legislations have been passed in other states but failed to make it past the Supreme Court which deems such laws unconstitutional.

I believe in liberty and the freedom to choose how you live but if you live in a society thats guarded by specific rules and regulations, you cannot break rules because you dont agree with them, you have to live by those rules. You cannot be exempt from beating your wives just because your code of conduct says its ok to do so and you should not be allowed to divorce your wife simply by proclaiming divorce! .

I agree although my divorce would’ve been easier and a lot less stressful if i could have left my ex by yelling divorce three times 😀

@Tim Riley. Tell me about it. I got a divorce in Thailand and had the hardest time finding a competent English speaking Thai divorce lawyer that didn’t cost an arm and leg. Thank God I found one. They were really professional too.
