The online platform will consist of plain English, avoid legal jargon and aim to tailor the language used to each individual’s circumstance. The fee will mirror a standard divorce proceeding of 600 pounds and an additional 550 pounds for the court fee. Users only need to fill out questions online with the aid of a phone-based support system from Co-op’s legal team.
The new online system aims to cut down the length of uncontested divorce proceedings from nine to six months. The company predicts a rush of customers within the first quarter of the year as couples desiring a divorce tend to wait until holiday period is over, as to not upset family members. The company adds that a popular time, couples log in to file for a divorce are in the mornings as they are keen to move on with their lives.
The Ministry of Justice has given the green light for the online divorce platform as long as both parties are in agreement. Doing divorces online could save the “overloaded court system” about 250 million pounds, allowing them to make better use of their resources.
