Is online dating the key to a successful marriage? Apparently so.
A new study has discovered that more than 1/3 of American marriages started as an online relationship and are in fact less likely to end in divorce. A study undertaken by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences explains that the research involved a Harris Poll of almost 20,000 Americans who got married between 2005 and 2012. The poll revealed that 35% of those couples met online. But while 8% of those who met offline got separated or divorced, the percentage for those who met online reduced to 6%.
Online dating is increasingly popular in Thailand, with many online dating sites such as Thai Lovelinks and Thai Kisses having more than a million members.
The majority of Thai/foreigner relationships will often have an “online component” be it from the initial meet up on line but if the relationship is long distance, then Skype, Facetime and other chat programs play a part in these relationships.
Marriages between Thai/foreigner couples who have met online are very common. Even though statistically we now know that couples who meet online are less likely to get a divorce, many individuals still prefer to err on the side of caution careful about their financial future. Accordingly, many couples marrying in Thailand register a Thailand Prenuptial Agreement when they marry. Thailand Law provides that prenuptial agreements need to be registered with the Government at the time of marriage. In the US and other common law countries, the prenup is generally a private agreement between parties and is not registered with the government, as it is in Thailand.
