The Congress has overridden Obama’s veto on the 9/11 law that enables families of victims of 9/11 to sue countries that were allegedly involved in the attack. This makes it the first ever veto override of Obama’s presidency.

The Senate vote was an overwhelming 97-1 with only Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, backing Obama’s veto. The House of Representatives voted hours later obtaining a 348-77 vote with 123 Democrats rebuffing the president and voting to override.

Zero Hedge reports a spokesman for the White House described the vote as “the single most embarrassing thing the United States Senate has done” in more than three decades.

The law, dubbed the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism (JASTA), will allow victims and their families to file a lawsuit in federal court against any nation they believe to have played a role in the tragic terrorist attack. Saudi Arabia is one of the countries that the victims have sought to sue for years for its alleged involvement.

According to Zero Hedge, the override was carried out because “Lawmakers don’t want to be seen as soft on punishing terrorist sponsors a few weeks before the election, at a time when voters are increasingly worried about radical Islamic terrorism in the wake of recent attacks in Manhattan, Minnesota and Orlando, Florida.
