Norway to Decriminalize Drugs and Focus on Treatment for Users

The majority of parliament members in Norway’s government are pushing for a reform where drug users will not be punished but instead assisted with treatment. However, policy makers will stay rigid on the illegalization of narcotics; the emphasis will be put on the decriminalization.

The aim is to treat substance abusers as ill and not criminals. The government has already started running programs issuing drug users to treatment programs instead of jail. They hope for a similar outcome to Portugal who decriminalized drugs in 2001 and saw a dramatic decrease in drug use.

However, not everyone is for the decriminalization, some party members on the right argue against the reform believing it should remain completely illegal.
