New law banning pit bulls has received severe criticism from several animals’ rights groupspit_bull_restrained

The Montreal government recently passed a new law that forbids its citizens from owning pit bulls as pets reports The Daily News.

Under the breed-specific legislation, dog breeds that fall under a certain body type, or head shape could be considered as pit bulls including American pit bull terriers, Staffordshire bull terriers, American Staffordshire terriers or any mix containing the breeds.

This law comes after a woman, Christine Vadnais, 55, was mauled to death in her house by a neighbor’s pit bull.

The law has received flak from several animals’ rights organizations saying it is discriminatory against harmless dogs.

The  Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) plan to fight back the rule “pushing Montreal to enact their proposed Kinder, Safer, Community Action Plan model — legislation that would coincide with a 2014 civil code amendment that granted dogs within Quebec the status of sentient beings.”
