As of October 3rd 2016, vendors that used to line the streets of Sukhumvit have no longer been allowed to set up shop according to a decree declared by the Thai government.

Police have since been seen keeping watch next to soi 11 to enforce the rule. Previous attempts by the junta to enforce the rule to rid Siam and Silom of vendors have failed.

According to Khaosodenglish, the first attempt came in early 2015 but was later amended to allow street stall owners to open shop only after 7pm.

Most vendors are willing to pay the fine of having stores rather than closing shop or moving.

Critics of the decree say that in enforcing this rule, Bangkok will lose its charm while the officials argue that they are merely trying to restore public space. Street vendors are not required to pay rent or taxes, according to the report.

So far, the junta have been able to get rid of vendors on Saphan Lek and Khlong Thom area.
