Niger Withdraws Sharia Law

The legislation to introduce Islamic Sharia law in Nigeria has been withdrawn after hundreds of people were killed in religious clashes, IOL reports.

Governor Abdulkadir Kure of Niger State announced the decision on Wednesday, explaining that it was “in the wider interests of peace and unity in Nigeria”.

The decision came as a result of religiously-motivated violence between two ethnic groups in Northern Nigeria; the Hausas, who are predominantly Muslims, and the Igbos, who are Christian.
