The Justice Minister has announced that on Tuesday, parliament had passed a bill to eradicate criminal convictions pertaining to homosexual activity before it was decriminalized in 1986. He further mentions that the bill is an important signifier that New Zealand will no longer tolerate discrimination against gay people.
The bill is said to affect about 1000 men in New Zealand. The three types of offenses that may be removed are sodomy, inappropriate behavior between males and having a place to resort to homosexual activity. Relatives of deceased people who had these types of convictions may apply to have them removed.
Applications will be assessed on whether the activity was consensual and the people involved were over 16 years of age.
