The State of New York has approved a bill that would criminalize the use of ticket bots which allow resellers to purchase the tickets in vast quantities and sell them at a higher price.

Although already illegal, the penalty for using ticket bots is negligible as resellers are subjected to small fines. The new law would impose stricter penalties including a yearlong jail term as well as $1000 fine.

According to a report by The Verge, the charges will not only be dealt to people running a ticket bot also to people who knowingly resell tickets that have been purchased with one.

The move comes after the creator of the musical Hamilton made a plea to the New York state assembly to criminalize these bots after tickets to his play had been purchased and resold at sky-high prices.
