New Thailand Law May Allow Private Marijuana Production

The Thai Ministry of Public Health has sent a draft law to the Thailand legislature that would allow medical professionals including traditional medicine healers to obtain a license for growing medical marijuana.

Currently, only state agencies or those specifically authorized to work with state agencies are given the green light to produce, import, or export cannabis.

If the draft legislation passes, which is expected, medical practitioners and folk healers will finally be able to grow cannabis for medical treatment without having to enter an official partnership with the state.

Government spokeswoman Traisulee Traisoranakul said the cabinet approved the proposal in principle after it was introduced by Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

Anutin argued that the amendment to Thailand’s historic medical cannabis legalization was necessary in order to ensure that there are no shortages of cannabis-based medicines in the Kingdom.
