A Maryland law took place last week that will enable more people to make use of naloxone (Narcan), a drug that prevents heroin overdoses.
As Capital Gazette reports, despite thousands of people having received training to use the drug, many have been unable to administer it to those in need as they can’t get doctors prescriptions.

Now, doctors at local health departments can write a blanket prescription to be used by those trained, who can present a card at the pharmacy which states that they have been trained by a state-certified trainer.
Statewide, 578 deaths were heroin related last year, up from 464 the previous year. Baltimore Health Commissioner.
Drug lawyers in Bangkok Chaninat and Leeds have decades of experience handling drug cases in Thailand, having successfully represented both Thai nationals and Foreigners.
Under the new law, the drug doesn’t have be administered by a medical professional and a doctor doesn’t have to be present.
The treatment drug “really puts power in people’s hands to save those around them,” said Dr. Nilesh Kalyanaraman. “It allows the community to take care of themselves. And with the standing order it makes it that much easier.”
So far about 4000 Baltimore residents have received the training to administer Narcan. It works by blocking opioids and preventing respiratory depression during an overdose.
