Variety reports California governor Jerry Brown signed a legislation on Saturday that requires entertainment websites such as IMDb to remove the age of celebrities if they request it.

The legislation which was proposed by Majority leader Ian Calderon (D-Whittier), was signed into law by Brown, according to the governor’s website.

The measure was passed in June by the Senate Judiciary Committee during which Calderon said “Subscribers should have control over whether their age and date of birth are posted on subscription websites used for employment purposes.” She added “AB 1687 provides a necessary clarification in the law that will help prevent age-based discrimination for individuals seeking employment in the entertainment industry.”

The law was celebrated by SAG-AFTRA actors’ union who saw it as a means to stop age discrimination and opposed by many others claiming it suppresses free speech.
