New Jersey Rabbi on Trial for Allegedly Kidnapping Husbands to Force Divorce

by Admin on February 23, 2015

Two undercover FBI agents allegedly exposed a New Jersey rabbi’s kidnapping operations as a “hired hand” for wives to force unwilling Jewish husbands into divorce, reports ABC News.

Rabbi Mendel Epstein and his “kidnap team” are on trial for charges of conspiracy to commit kidnapping and attempted kidnapping related to a staged kidnapping in 2013 and three other forced divorces, according to ABC News.

Supposedly incriminating voice and video recordings taken by the FBI agents in their undercover operation were played by prosecutors at the trial.

The female FBI agent, who had posed as a woman seeking help convincing her husband to divorce her, also testified at the trial last week.

Mendel Epstein’s defense attorney Robert Stahl called him “an advocate for women” and argued that though “some laws may have been broken,” kidnapping wasn’t one of them, according to ABC News.

One expert witness, Rabbi Jacob Goldstein, said that though Jews have religious laws, “in the case of a just government … like the United States, the laws of the land are the ones we must follow.”
