The US Supreme Court rejected a bid by Nestle SA this week to throw out a lawsuit which will hold them liable for the use of child slavery in Ivory Coast.
Nestle is the world’s largest food manufacturer. They have been accused of knowingly using child slave labor to harvest cocoa.
The lawsuit includes two other companies – Cargill Inc and Archer-Daniels-Midland Co, and has been filed by former victims of child slavery.
American business lawyers in Thailand Chaninat and Leeds have been representing companies in Thailand for decades.
The plaintiffs, originally from Mali, say the companies “aided and abetted human rights violations through their active involvement in purchasing cocoa from Ivory Coast.”
