Michigan live reports that the Michigan Court of Appeals has ruled a law that enables state officials to wolf hunting if they are ever dropped from the endangered species list is unconstitutional.

According to an opinion that was released on Wednesday, a panel of three judges overturned a 2015 Court of Claims’ ruling that classified gray wolves as game species.

The decision was welcomed by the Keep Michigan Wolves Protected (KMWP) group. KMWP director Jill Fritz was quoted by Mlive as saying, “This was a blatant power grab by politicians to take away voting rights from Michigan citizens,”

“We are delighted the court has rejected the legislature’s outrageous attempt to subvert the will of the people of Michigan, and declared unconstitutional the legislature’s attempt to force a wolf hunt. This ruling restores the people’s decision, in two statewide votes, overwhelmingly rejecting the trophy hunting and commercial trapping of the state’s small population of wolves.”

Michigan held a wolf hunt in 2013 where 23 wolves were killed.
