Bill was proposed by President Enrique Pena-Nieto
A bill that legalizes the use of marijuana has just been passed by Mexico’s senate following a national drug policy debate.
Independent reports, “98 senators voted to pass a new bill proposed by President Enrique Pena-Nieto to permit the use and production of marijuana for scientific and medicinal purposes.”
The bill will now go to the lower house where if passed, it will become law.
In a statement, the Senate said that the legislation will direct the Health Department to “design public policies to regulate the medicinal use of this plant and its derivatives”.
The law was welcomed by the Mexico Unido Contra la Delincuencia, a group that is working to curb crime in Mexico. Lisa Sanchez, the group director for drug policy said to Independent, “It’s been years that we’ve been fighting for acknowledgment and approval and recognition of the medical and therapeutic uses of cannabis, and today we finally have something.”

According to the report, “The state Department of Health said Tuesday it’s ready to connect its seed-to-sale tracking software with the programs used by the eight companies that received licenses to grow and sell medial marijuana. It plans to do so Feb. 1.”

Thailand criminal law will penalize you for possession of marijuana. Marijuana carries a lighter sentence than possession of hard substances like cocaine and heroin I think
