Malaysian Man in Court over Islamic Symbol on Smartphone

A 26 year old Malaysian man was charged on Tuesday of having an Islamic State symbol on his smartphone, he now faces up to seven years imprisonment, reports The Nation.

Zakariya Ahmad entered no plea to the charge of possessing the illegal image, which police discovered after Zakariya was questioned on suspicion of Islamic State supporters involvement.

Judge Erry Shahriman Nor Aripin, of Kuala Lumpur Magistrates court, denied bail and set the start of the trial for October 30.

According to police reports, almost 100 Malaysian citizens have gone to Syria and Iraq to fight alongside the radical Islamist movement. Since last year dozens of Malaysians have been charged for supporting the movement.
