Malaysia’s highest court today rejected a challenge to the ban on Christians using the word “Allah” to refer to God, ending the years-long highly divisive legal case in the Muslim-majority nation reports The Economic Times.
The case was brought by the Catholic Church, which was seeking to overturn a government ban on it referring to God by the Arabic word “Allah” in the local Malay-language edition of its Herald newspaper.

The Court held that the decision with regard to the ban was lawful and reasonable.
But after the Court announced its verdict on Monday, the government released a statement saying that the ruling would only apply to the Church’s newspaper, which has been at the center of the court battle since Malaysian authorities ordered the publication to cease using the Arabic word in 2007.
Malaysian Christians will still be able to use the word “Allah” in church, the government’s statement said.
