London’s Mayor Boris Johnson has said that the UK accepting Sharia law is “absolutely unacceptable,” reports LBC.
The Mayor reprimanded clerics from other faiths, including from the Church of England, who had backed the idea of religious law taking precedence over British law. He said:
“The idea of a parallel system of law, a parallel system of judicature, people making the laws according to a different system is absolutely unacceptable.
“It’s alien to our traditions. I won’t have it in London.”

In 2008, the Archbishop of Canterbury sparked controversy by saying that it was “inevitable” that some aspects of Sharia law would be included in wider UK law.
Mayor Johnson continued:
“Everybody must be equal under the law, and everybody must obey the same law. That is absolutely cast-iron.”

ThaiLawForum reported last month that Sharia law is proving problematic in India, with Indian muslims divorcing their wives using the “triple talaq.” In ancient Sharia law, a man can divorce his wife by saying the word ‘talaq’ three times. In the modern world, muslim Indians are instantly divorcing their wives over text message or Facebook.
Muslims in India are protected under the Muslim Personal Law, which allows clerics to apply Islamic laws on civil issues such as divorce.
Whether certain aspects of this practice become used in the UK remains to be seen.
Sharia law has been introduced in Brunei, and Thailand – primarily a Buddhist country, may also refer to Sharia law when dealing with family issues in Muslim communities.
