Lebanon’s first ever animal welfare bill came into effect on Tuesday, according to Phys Org.
After years of campaigning by animal rights activists Lebanese President Michel Aoun finally signed the bill, which protects both wild and domestic animals from abuse.
The law provides regulations for pet owners, zoos, pet shops and breeders, and outlaws keeping endangered animals. Under this new legislation offenders will receive fines or jail time for incidents or abuse or cruelty to animals.

Jason Mier, executive director of Animals Lebanon, says this law is ‘strict, if not stricter, than other laws in the region’.
The law will allow authorities to crack down on the trade of rare animals, which has been a lucrative industry in Lebanon for many years.
