Lawyers Taking Note: Rise in Campus Sex Claims

US colleges and universities are seeing a spike in the number of sexual misconduct allegations being filed under Title IX, and some lawyers are taking notice.

As American Lawyer explains, Title IX was introduced by Richard Nixon in 1972, and was designed to enforce gender equality on campuses.

It has only recently been applied to sexual misconduct allegations, meaning schools are compelled to launch internal investigations as to how they handle such complaints and whether their responses are discriminatory.

University legal departments are not typically equipped to cope with the scale of these investigations, which is why a group of lawyers have launched a new initiative which will assist universities to deal with such investigations more efficiently.

Law firms Day Pitney and Cohen Seglias Pallas Greenhall & Furman will bring their combined experience in corporate investigations, law enforcement and university representation.

Day Pitney counsel Steven Cash says “It’s an increasing burden on their [universities] resources, this kind of investigation.”
