Divorce lawyers have found a niche of catering to men going through divorce that they believe gives them an edge in a competitive legal market.
“Divorce for men” law firms aim to be the best defense for a man in the middle of a divorce in terms of child custody, property rights, and finances.
These lawyers state that their expertise gives them the upper hand in situations where other lawyers might cave, such as teaching men on how to avoid confrontations that could cause a restraining order.
When men’s rights groups started pushing against divorce and custody laws in the 70s and 80s divorce lawyers found they had a new clientele they could work with.
One law firm in Texas has three separate sites: one for promoting the law firm, one for divorced fathers, and a third on men’s rights.
Some states have also been trying to create more equality in the court room by capping spousal support so that recipients, who are usually women, no longer get lifetime alimony. And as women’s earnings equal or are even higher than their partner’s, some ex-wives end up paying alimony.
However, some lawyers who specialize in representing men say their client still encounter discrimination from judges who are reluctant to view men as equally capable parents or deserving of spousal support.
In general, some Thailand divorce lawyers note that there is a preference for mothers to have custody of young children in Thailand. However, this is not always the case. Many times awards of maintenance and child support in Thailand are fairly conservative in comparison to western jurisdiction.
