Kratom Now Schedule 1 Drug Alongwith Heroin

The DEA has now placed Kratom on the most restricted drug listdeakratom

The Activist Post reports that The DEA has added Kratom to the list of schedule 1 drugs alongside heroin and LSD.  This report comes after the DEA had filed a  notice of intent (PDF)  against the Southeast Asian plant to the most restricted classification of the Controlled Substances Act. This was done temporarily on the 30th of August 2016 followed by the full announcement published by the Federal Register the next day.

Indigenous to Thailand, Kratom(Mitragyna speciosa) was banned in the Southeast Asian country but placed under Schedule 5 in 1979. There have been multiple arrests for possession of kratom leaves, more recently five people were arrested for possession of 400 kg of kratom leaves on August 17th, 2016. However, recent reports show that Thailand is looking to lift the ban on Kratom to make it available to the general public.
